If your pregnancy takes you into the hot summer months, you absolutely need to know about lungis (a.k.a. sarongs, a.k.a. pareos, etc.) They're fabulous as beach cover-ups or for just hanging out in hot weather. Lungis are the everyday fashion staple in much of Southeast Asia and since they are wrapped, not sewn, they are infinitely adjustable and wonderfully comfortable. A lungi is essentially a rectangular piece of cloth, usually a lovely ethnic floral with a border, sometimes a hand dyed batik. They're usually about 3 1/2 by 6 feet and are wrapped around the waist as a skirt or above the breasts as a sort of shift. If you have any friends headed anywhere in Asia, ask them to bring you back a few. They're quite cheap and relatively easy to find - they’re even sold at duty-free shops in airport stores. If you can't come by a real one, simply buy a nice piece of fabric and make your own. It’s easy! |
